2009 MSU FACULTY-STAFF GOLF LEAGUE
IT IS TIME TO START THINKING GOLF!!!
The MSU Faculty/Staff Golf League season will begin on Saturday April 4, 2009 , with open play on Akers West.
SIGN-UP FOR 2009
- ELIGIBILITY – If you or your spouse is eligible for an MSU faculty/staff ID card, you are eligible to join the league.
- NEW MEMBERSHIP CATEGORY : The Board approved a new membership category in 2005. This category is titled: Faculty-Staff League Member Sponsored MSU Alumni. Any Faculty/Staff Golf League member may formally sponsor MSU Alumni, who are not on the MSU Faculty/Staff, to be a member of the league. This category was approved by the Board to try to increase membership and Saturday play without violating the integrity of our remaining a "faculty/staff" league. (See Alumni Sponsor Section on the Registration Form.)
- LEAGUE DUES - $15 for the year. (The same rate since 2005.)
- 2009 REGISTRATION - send in the enclosed Registration form with your check for $15.00 ASAP (follow instructions on the form).
- TOURNAMENT FEES – $5 per event – pay as you play; winnings distributed weekly as gift certificates for Akers clubhouse merchandise.
- TOUNAMENT SIGN-UP – Sign-up by 5 PM Wednesday before the weekend of the tournament either online at golf.msu.edu and click on Leagues and Faculty Staff Golf Club or sign-up at the Akers West Clubhouse. Phone sign up Is not permitted.
- TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE – See attached Tournament Schedule or look online.
- WEEKLY EVENT COORDINATORS : We are asking everyone who is a regular player, i.e., six events or more per season, to be a Weekly Event Coordinator for one event. To facilitate this process we are asking you to complete the EVENT COORDINATOR SIGN-UP SECTION OF THE REGISTRATION FORM. If you do not complete this portion of the form, and you are considered a regular player, you will be assigned a coordinator date by the Board. This worked very well last year.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Approximate Event Start Times: 8 AM to 10 AM TEE Time starts on days we play on the WEST course; 8 AM shotgun start on days we play on the EAST course.
- We have two member-guest events planned. These are on the holiday weekends. Two will be Scramble formats, and the last is open play.
- Annual MSU Vs U of M Faculty Staff League Match. This is an away year and is scheduled for play on the U-M Golf Course on Monday, June 29, 2009.
- We will continue the season long Match Play event (see the schedule for starting date).
- SPEED OF PLAY: Speed of play continues to be a priority in 2009. Speed of play guidelines will be available at every tournament. The Board has implemented the following decisions this year to encourage faster speed of play. We will continue the following Board Policy for Speed of Play:
Each foursome will be expected to finish their round within 4½ hours and within 15 minutes of the foursome in front of them. Any foursome that finishes a round in more than 4½ hours and more than 15 minutes behind the foursome in front of them will be cited for slow play. Such a citation will result in the names of the foursome members being listed in the Slow Play column of the Tournament winners’ announcement sheet. This list will appear weekly in the MSU Faculty Staff League Blue Notebook kept at Akers West. Please note the first foursome off the tee will be expected to finish in 4 ½ hours; however, they won’t be cited for slow play unless they finish in more than 4and3/4 hours. Further, if the foursome ahead takes more than 4 ½ hours to play, the foursomes behind will only be cited if they are more than 15 minutes behind the foursome in front. - NEW MEMBER RECRUITMENT – We are always looking for new members. Please encourage new faculty/staff and alumni sponsored members to consider joining the league. In order to encourage new members we do allow the following:
A Faculty-Staff Golf League member may bring, as a guest, any MSU faculty-staff member or potential alumni sponsored member who is not a golf league member, to any tournament event (any scheduled tournament event, not just the member guest tournaments), one time, before the Faculty-Staff guest would need to pay the $15 league fee to join. The Faculty Staff guest would need to be signed up before the usual Wednesday deadline, pay the greens fee, and $5 tournament fee. When recruiting new members remember to tell them about the unique and attractive features of our league.
Benefits of membership talking points:
- Low League Annual Dues of $15.
- Play as many or as few weekends as you want; no season long obligation to play every event or find a substitute.
- Opportunity to BEAT MICHIGAN at the annual inter-league event!
- Cool events like the season long Match Play tournament and prizes at the President’s Outing!
- You meet lots of friendly, fun and nice people affiliated with MSU.
- Weekly Tournament-Event Coordinator Duties. The Weekly tournament-event coordinator signs in players at the given event, and collects $5 from each player for the event fee. The coordinator needs to be at the starter station 30 minutes ahead of Shotgun starts and 20 minutes ahead for t-time starts. The tournament-event coordinator will be placed in the last foursome of t-time starts. All continuing league members who play an average of 6 or more events a season are expected to serve as a tournament-event coordinator for one event each season. Please complete the tournament event sign-up sheet at the bottom of the 2009 registration form. If you do not complete the form, the board will have the option to assign you to a date. Once you are assigned to a date, it is your responsibility to obtain a replacement should you be unable to make your schedule coordinator date. You will be notified of your assigned date via email; a list of coordinators by date will also be available in the west pro shop.
- Guests who are not league members may only play on the member-guest weekends. Please do not pressure Denise or the Tournament Event Coordinator to allow a guest to play at a regular tournament event. There is a one time exception for faculty/staff affiliated guests who might be interested in joining the league (see above). There is also the new alumni sponsored category.
